Tumble, Jump and Have Fun with Our Gymnastics Classes!

When you are looking for gymnastics studios that serve the area of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, then you are likely to find several options. Here at Old Town Gymnastics Academy (OTGA), we offer some of the best gymnastics instruction and variety in the area. We would be delighted to get started working with your budding gymnast, so look no further!

Our goal is to use developmental gymnastics as a foundation for movement. While children are having fun, they are learning about movement, physical fitness, respect, and perseverance – lessons that last a lifetime. At OTGA, we offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced gymnastics. We also have a competition team, as well as cheer and tumbling classes. It is our top priority to provide a safe, positive, secure, and loving environment in which children are encouraged to explore and excel at their own pace.

Gymnastics is one of the greatest sports available to children and one of the few that addresses the components of fitness and the skill components of movement. Most of our children enter the program with specific “tumbling goals” in mind such as learning a cartwheel or round-off back handspring. When there are fitness issues, particularly strength and flexibility (two of the fitness components) that need to be addressed for skill attainment, then “fitness” becomes a primary goal of their training.

When working with our expert coaches, children are able to get the personalized instruction they need in order to progress their skills at a reasonable pace. Ensuring the safe movement of our gymnasts is our top priority. We focus on correct form and technique, building up to the most complex gymnastic skills.

Preschool Gymnastics

“Learning to Move” is the motto for our preschool classes. These classes are structured with specific goals. Classes accommodate various developmental levels of each group and incorporates:

  • developmental gymnastics
  • creative movement
  • yoga style stretching
  • sports skills

OTGA Classes will begin with a warm-up, work on the apparatus and conclude with a group activity.

Preschool classes are grouped by age. This is the age where children develop their “Love to Learn Attitude”. Providing multiple successes in a non-competitive, fun, loving environment is the key for this attitude to develop.

Gymnastics not only develops strength, balance, coordination and flexibility, but it also develops reading-readiness! Learning to follow circuits and sequences, laterality, directionality, hand-eye coordination and more are just a few of the components of reading-readiness. These components are used in abundance in our preschool gymnastics. Special props, music, and small equipment are also used to enhance learning and FUN!

Preschool Programs:

A playful unstructured “open-play” opportunity with emphasis on exploration and socialization. Parent participation is required. Beginners Play Group is not a structured class and is a pay as you go activity.

This begins structured classes for our preschool gymnasts and has a strong emphasis on social skills and group involvement. Class centers around age- and skill-appropriate activities. This stage begins the introduction to formal gymnastic apparatus and learning body shaping. We coach with comfort so if your little gymnasts needs you, that is perfectly fine.

Imagination comes to life with mountains to climb and rivers to swim. Classes become more physically challenging and begins the introduction to more formal gymnastics. Skill acquisition becomes more challenging as more focus is placed on tumbling and conditioning. This marks the transition from our preschool program to youth gymnastics program.

Youth Gymnastics

For gymnastics skill attainment, fitness components must also be achieved and must continue to progress in order to meet the increasing needs of the sport of gymnastics. As part of the “fitness” goal, a standardized warm-up for youth gymnastics will be incorporated, as well as sports-specific conditioning and flexibility stretching.

Class size is limited to allow lots of turns (repetition) and attention from the instructor. Special props, music and small equipment will also be used to enhance learning and FUN!

WHICH CLASS?

We use age and skill level as the primary variables for determining your gymnast’s class. Then we subdivide each class into smaller groups for more turns and instruction on the apparatus. For gymnasts desiring faster progress, we recommend training two classes per week and/or private instruction for additional progress on specific skills, such as a back handspring (BHS) for cheerleading tryouts.
